Charlie Kohler is a shy and melancholic pianist whose brothers have got themselves into trouble with a gang of criminals. One night, one of them is chased and seeks refuge in the bar where Charlie plays. Léna, the waitress, knows his past and his real name: Edouard Saroyan, a great pianist whose wife committed suicide. She wants to help him become Edouard again. But Charlie comes into conflict with the gangsters and the couple end up on the run. Based on the novel *Down There* by David Goodis.
