The Four Hundred Blows is a moving portrait of childhood and adolescence, based on Antoine Doinel (Jean-Pierre Léaud), a 14-year-old boy who rebels against the authoritarianism of his school and the contempt of his mother and stepfather. Inspired by his own personal story, Truffaut explores the passage to adulthood and the role of rebellion and freedom in the construction of individual identity.
