At 71 years old, José Cardoso Pires suffers a stroke, losing the ability to relate to the world. Despite being a writer, he does not recognize words and cannot even articulate them coherently. Surrounded by translucent figures with whom he is unable to communicate, he apathetically contemplates the consternation of family and friends.
