The pretext for Oliveira to (once again) film his city, the same as the first Douro, Faina Fluvial and so many other of his films, was Porto 2001 European Capital of Culture. "This is a film about Porto, it's a film about Manoel de Oliveira's childhood, it's a film about the memory of Porto as Porto was at the time of Manoel de Oliveira's childhood, it's a film about shelters and it's a film about the beginnings and the ends of a great and wonderful journey" (João Bénard da Costa).
