Theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (1904-1967) was the scientist who, under the Manhattan Project, headed the Los Alamos Laboratory during World War II, where the atomic bomb was developed. It is a complicated legacy, which he himself tried to grapple with during his lifetime. British filmmaker Christopher Nolan – director of "Memento," "Inception," "The Dark Knight," "Interstellar," and "Tenet" – wrote and directed this epic biopic in which Cillian Murphy plays the scientist, telling the story of how it all unfolded. It is an adaptation of the biography "American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer," written by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin in 2005. In the cast, Murphy, the Irish actor who led the popular series "Peaky Blinders" and who now has his first leading role in a major film here, is joined by names such as Florence Pugh, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Rami Malek, Kenneth Branagh, Olivia Thirlby, Benny Safdie, Josh Hartnett, and Matthew Modine, playing individuals involved in the project. It is one of Universal Pictures' major bets for Summer 2023.
