The year is 1925, and the Burbank brothers own a ranch in Montana. At the Red Mill restaurant, on their way to market, the brothers meet Rose, the widowed owner, and her impressionable son Peter. Phil behaves so cruelly that he brings both to tears, reveling in their pain and making his companions laugh – all except his brother George, who comforts Rose, and later returns to marry her. As Phil swings between fury and cunning, his torment of Rose takes on a mysterious form – appearing in the corners of her vision, whistling a tune she cannot play on the piano. His mockery of her son is more overt, amplified by the cheers of Phil's cowboy disciples. It is then that Phil seems to take the boy under his wing…
