In 1947, László, a Hungarian Jewish architect and Holocaust survivor, emigrates to Pennsylvania to finally rebuild his career, his marriage, his life. After facing poverty and indignity, he meets the wealthy industrialist Van Buren, who hires him to design a community center on an extremely difficult project, but one with the potential to enrich László. A detailed recreation of post-war America, The Brutalist, simultaneously hopeful and bleak, is an exploration of the power of money and privilege, where historical trauma always exerts an oppressive force.
