In Paris, in the early 20th century, Claude, a young Frenchman from a middle-class background, is invited by Anne to spend the summer on the Welsh coast with her mother and her sister Muriel. Anne hopes that Claude might one day become her sister’s husband, and the two begin to fall in love. As a test, their mothers decide that they must live apart for a year, without any contact, before getting married. Back in Paris, Claude has several affairs and writes a letter to Muriel to break off their engagement… Based on the novel *The Two English Girls and the Continental* by Henri-Pierre Roché.
