In 1970, in Belém do Pará, during the Círio de Nazaré festivities, a lorry driver meets Iracema, a young Indian prostitute. He gives her a lift and leaves her in a village in the middle of the road. The journey, like the film itself, serves as a pretext to expose the problems of the region - deforestation, poor working and health conditions, and even the sale of peasants - in contrast to the fanciful institutional propaganda.
