Ingrid Bergman portrays Irene Girard, a wealthy and egocentric woman accustomed to a life of luxury in Rome. When her son dies dramatically, Irene decides to dedicate her time and money to those in need, in order to cope with her guilt and find meaning in her life. Her new life purpose leads to marital problems and questions about her sanity.
