Under the neon lights of Hong Kong's urban landscape, two parallel stories explore the melancholy of lost love and the innocence of new passions. The first narrative follows Agent 223, a policeman who projects his fate onto a collection of expiring pineapple cans, their sell-by date falling on May 1st. An encounter with a mysterious woman wearing a blonde wig jolts him out of his rut. The second story unfolds around Agent 663 and the end of his relationship with a flight attendant, a tragedy that reaches the ears of a snack bar worker who begins searching for ways to cheer him up. With its vibrant colors and effervescent movement, Chungking Express marked the internationalization of Wong Kar Wai.
