Dora writes letters at the Central Station in Rio de Janeiro for illiterate people. When one of her clients is hit by a car, her nine-year-old son Josué is left lost and abandoned in the station. Against her will, Dora takes the boy in and ends up accompanying him to the north-eastern countryside in search of his father.
